The U.S. Supreme Court’s 2023 ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard struck down racial preference policies. The ruling led universities to see new ways to promote diversity, such as providing an admissions boost based on economic disadvantage rather than race. Recently, however, the Trump administration has claimed that even such race-neutral efforts are illegal if they are partly motivated by a desire to promote racial diversity.
